KPMG in Sri Lanka continues commitment to the Northern Province

KPMG in Sri Lanka recently celebrated the third anniversary of its Jaffna branch and officially opened two libraries in the Ramanathapuram Government Tamil Mixed School in Killinochchi and the Vattappalai Maha Vidyalayam Mixed School in Mullaitivu, extending the Firm’s already strong involvement with the Northern Province of Sri Lanka. Jaffna branch anniversary Following the liberation of the North, KPMG in Sri Lanka was the first international professional firm of Chartered Accountants amongst the ‘Big Four’ to have established an office in the city of Jaffna. The branch, which is located in the heart of the city, Nallur, Jaffna offers audit and tax services. KPMG’s history in Jaffna dates back to the early 1980s, with three decades of service to the region’s businesses and community at large, before it was suspended due to the uncertain conditions in the North. The Firm celebrated the occasion by inviting representatives of the business community in the Jaffna area. Addressing the gathering, the Firm’s Managing Partner, Reyaz Mihular emphasised the importance of regional businesses not limiting their potential to their respective regions. Instead, he urged the need to focus on Sri Lanka as a whole and thereby contribute to the development of the nation. Ranjani Joseph, the coordinating partner of KPMG’s Jaffna Branch stated, “The Northern Province is fast developing with many economic prospects and we look forward to assisting you explore these vast opportunities in investment and trade.” KPMG in Sri Lanka Head of Audit Suren Rajakarier explained the types of services the firm offers and how those services can be used by businesses in Jaffna at a time when the region is experiencing a period of accelerated growth and new opportunities. The Firm’s Managing Partner concluded the session by inviting the business community in the region to build their businesses on KPMG’s position of strength. KPMG Foundation and KPMG Alumni Association Library Projects The libraries opened in Killinochchi and Mullaitivu, which were constructed in collaboration with the non-profit organisation ‘The foundation of Goodness’, are aimed at providing greater access to education to students in need of extended learning opportunities. The projects were funded by the KPMG foundation and the KPMG Alumni Association. Commenting on the projects, the Firm’s Head of Audit and Partner for Alumni and Sustainability Suren Rajakarier stated, “Corporate Social Responsibility is part of the culture of KPMG and is part of our values and our business strategy. I thank KPMG in Sri Lanka’s alumni and theFoundation of Goodness for their continued support towards our initiatives. We intend to expand the KPMG Library Project program by extending further support to other schools in the coming year.”
