In the effort to inform and influence public policy debates on socio-economic development in Sri Lanka, the Institute of Policy Studies of Sri Lanka (IPS), the country’s apex economic policy research think tank, has now enabled free access to a large volume of IPS research and analysis. IPS has released online the Policy Briefs of five years of its annual flagship publication – ‘Sri Lanka: State of the Economy’ (SOE). Close to 40 Policy Briefs covering socio-economic analysis, policy discussion and insightful commentary are now available for free download and sharing, which were earlier available only in print version, for sale at the IPS and leading bookstores.
“The primary objective of the IPS is to inform and shape the policy debates in Sri Lanka with high-quality independent research. With this latest effort to make IPS research more freely available to the wider public, we believe that anyone, anywhere can easily access our work. We hope it will stimulate new discussions and also bring forward new partnerships and research collaborations,” announced IPS Executive Director Dr. Saman Kelegama.
Opened up to a greater audience, this collection of independent analysis would be invaluable resource material for economists, researchers, public and private sector officials, students interested in socio-economic issues, country analysts, foreign and domestic investment advisory firms, foreign diplomatic missions, local and international development agencies, and development practitioners.
The freely available Policy Briefs cover a wide array of policy issues and challenges in the country including inclusive economic growth, infrastructure development, emerging challenges in the health sector, migration and development, food and agricultural challenges, enterprise development, environment and climate change, and sustainable tourism.
Marking this release, IPS Research Economist Anushka Wijesinha observed that, “This research content spanning five years, looks into the socio-economic policy challenges in the years before, and immediately after, the end of the war. So it provides an interesting and informative historical backdrop against which the current scenario on each of these key policy areas can be explored and debated. But this is just the first steps. We are working to make more and more of our research available freely online.”
