Recently LTL completed the International Development Agency (subsidiary of World Bank) funded, rural electrification project in Kenya. It involves of constructing a medium voltage electrification scheme, covering 99 kilometres of 33kV lines and 120 kilometres of low voltage lines and installation of associated low voltage equipment, including distribution transformers to the provinces around the famous Mount Kenya in Central Kenya.
To coincide with the visit of President Mahinda Rajapaksa to Kenya, the completed project was formally handed over to Kenya Power by LTL.
“I believe that there is much potential to strengthen trade and economic relations between our two countries. Sri Lankan private companies have invested in the power and energy sector in African state and they have the capacity and desire to extend their business and services in the region. One of these projects is the ‘Nanyuki Transmission Project’ built by Sri Lanka’s LTL Holdings Ltd., which was just handed over to the Kenyan Government, during the state visit to Kenya, by President Mahinda Rajapaksa in December.”
In the meantime, in mid-December, President of Uganda Yoweri Musaveni officially launched the West Nile Grid Extension project at Arua, capital of the West Nile Region in Uganda, which is to be executed by LTL Group.
The KFW and European Union funded West Nile Grid extension project, is worth over Euro 17 million and involves the construction of 395 kilometres of 33kV Power Distribution Lines, 200 kilometres’s of low voltage lines and supply and installation of 150 Distribution Transformers manufactured in Sri Lanka.
LTL Group outbid several leading companies such as KEC (India), Jyoti Structures (India), Chint (China) and Siemens (South Africa/Germany) to secure the contract, which will be completed in 20 months.
LTL has successfully won tenders worth over USD 80 Million in the last 3 years in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania and is becoming strong force in the Power Sector of South East Africa.
LTL Holdings has also being exporting transformers to Ethiopia and Botswana for several years now.
