BMW has been ruling the roost in America for quite a while, as far as luxury auto sales are concerned, but another German company has taken BMW out of the top spot, according to recently released figures. Thanks to a banner year where it sold 14% more vehicles than it did the previous year, Mercedes is now the best-selling maker of luxury vehicles in terms of American sales, having sold 312,534 units in 2013 to edge BMW’s 309,280 units.
2013 was a record year for Mercedes, with the C-Class selling 88,251 units to lead the company’s line-up. BMW, however, still had the 3/4 Series, which collectively sold 119,521; BMW also sold more cars than Mercedes in December 2013, with sales of 37,389 beating out the 33,007 sold by Mercedes.
Mercedes-Benz took up the slack in the midsize luxury class, as the E-Class had 69,803 units sold in 2013, comfortably beating BMW’s 56,863 units sold in that category. Also doing quite well for Mercedes was the M-Class, which sold a total of 41,326 units last year.
This is a commendable feat considering that the US was one of the few markets where Mercedes-Benz was lagging behind BMW for many years. With the new 2014 C-Class and GLA, Mercedes-Benz most probably has plans to expand this lead even further.
Mercedes-Benz is represented in Sri Lanka by Diesel & Motor Engineering PLC, who is the only authorised distributor in Sri Lanka for Mercedes-Benz.
