Minister Basil Rajapaksa opens modernised Cheddikula​m rice mill in Vavuniya

Basil Rajapaksa, Minister of Economic Development declared open the modernised Cheddikulam rice mill in Vavuniya district on 7 September 2011. This rice mill was renovated in order to enhance the paddy processing capacity in Vavuniya District.  Rs. 30 million was spent by USAID, GTZ organisation and the Cheddikulam Multi purpose Co-operative Society, to re-tool this rice mill which had been damaged during the period of the civil war.

The rice mill is capable of processing 20,000 Kg of rice per day. It has directly created 40 new jobs at the mill and will have a direct and positive impact on the incomes of estimated 8000 paddy farmers in the area.
