With the advent of Tata Nano Cabs, the vehicles have become a common sight in and around Colombo, and are fast spreading to other cities across the island. Their distinctive appearance together with their high utility makes them a very visible entity on the streets of Sri Lanka.

Cabs in general offer exciting opportunities for advertisement. Transit Media Advertising, as it is called, is exploited already in Sri Lanka, but hasn’t yet spread to the lucrative and growing fleet of Nano Cabs.

Cabs usually use distinctive light boxes to indicate availability for passengers and these light boxes are heavily and very effectively used in cities around the world for advertising purposes, being one of the most visible and eye catching elements on a busy street.

Light boxes with availability signage have not been introduced to Sri Lankan cabs yet, but that will soon change, with Ads in Motion planning on fitting the 100 strong fleet of Nano Cabs with fully-fledged light boxes.

The company plans on selling advertising space on these light boxes along with other spaces like LCD screens within the cabs and space on the body of the vehicle. The venture will be launched on 10 Nano Cabs, with Mlesna Tea having already bought up space on their light boxes.  Anselm Perera, founder of Mlesna Tea, said: “Nano Cabs and the concept of Sid – Ads in Motion – are both innovative pioneer ventures. Being associated with this venture is indeed a pleasure for all of us at Mlesna. We wish this project great success as other organisations join in to share this innovation.”

Sid Mampitiya from Ads in Motion said that light boxes would be available for all of Nano’s 100 Tata cars and also for the 150 additional cars that the firm and its subsidiaries plan to add to its fleet before the end of 2012.
