The National Mobile Service Provider Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel proved to be one of the strongest business entities when it was awarded the prestigious ‘Taiki Akimoto 5S Award’ and ‘Best 5S Implementation in the Telecommunications Sector (Large Category) Award’ at the annual Japan Sri Lanka Technical and Cultural Association (JASTECA) Awards a few days ago. The JASTECA awards is a highly competitive award competition which this year received entries from 104 companies for the prestigious 5S award amongst other award categories in various sectors such as Manufacturing, Services, Trade, Banks, Apparel, Telecommunication and Hydro-Power Projects. Mobitel was awarded the overall winner of two of the most prestigious awards of the night in addition to three Merit Awards and two Certificates of Compliance won by Mobitel’s regional offices across the country. The National Mobile Service Provider, which has been practicing 5S for the last five years, has been highly commended by global brands based in India, Malaysia and other countries for its business supportive work ethic, its efficient company processes, the tidiness and orderliness of the company’s offices and the productivity and positive attitudes of company staff. “In a short span of three months we were able to implement 5S at our Finance Division in year 2008 and then completed the implementation at the Head Office by 2009. This made a remarkable change in the appearance, productivity and attitudes of the staff which was clearly visible to the entire organisation. With the implementation of 5S we have seen the staff morale and confidence improving,” said Mobitel Chief Financial Officer Nishantha Weerakoon. “The entire organisation was taken over by extensive efforts by staff and management alike, to convert our workplace into an even more effective entity, relentlessly focusing on adding value to the activities we perform each day. The sheer dedication and keenness shown by our team members has been encouraging as it has allowed us to enhance the quality of our services. This is a historic occasion for Team Mobitel,” he said. The Japanese 5S workplace organisational method was introduced to Sri Lanka in 1994 by Dr. Taiki Akimoto, and since 1996 JASTECA has conducted the competition annually to give recognition to companies that followed 5S to develop an efficient and professional work ethic in their organisations.
