President Maithripala Sirisena emphasised that he would not halt construction work on the Moragahakanda water project halfway through its completion as this project would resolve the agricultural and drinking water problems faced by farmers in Rajarata, ending their long and sorrowful tale.

The President made these remarks during an inspection tour yesterday to the Moragahakanda reservoir.

He also looked into the progress of the project and instructed the Project Director and the staff to complete the work within the stipulated period.

The foundation stone for the Moragahakanda project, the biggest multi-functional irrigation project, was laid by President Sirisena in 2007 when he was the Minister of Agricultural Development and Agrarian Services Development.

Construction work on the project is expected to be completed by 2016. While the project is completely handled by local engineers, financial assistance is being provided by the Government.

“Since 2012 construction work on the project was progressing well to date,” said Project Director R.B. Tennakoon.

He further said that the resettlement process of the people in the area, who lost houses and property due to the project, was being completed successfully and much needed infrastructure facilities such as roads and electricity would be provided speedily.
