MPMC carried out its 100th delivery at OPL Hambantota on the 25th of October 2014 to MV Gelbray Express. The vessel was on its way from Australia to the Gulf with a full load of livestock, which was on a tight schedule. The vessel was supplied 400mt of IFO at anchorage within four hours from arrival to departure. MV Gelbray Express is a Singapore-flagged brand new vessel built in 2014 on its voyage from Freemantle, Australia to Eilat in Israel with a full cargo of 4,315 cattle. Despite varied inquiries the port has had in the last four months in operation, the port has made a mark in the Silk Route as a favoured stopover for bunkers. The ancillary services too are picking up with crew changes, provision, stores and fresh water supply, technical services, etc., and the port expects to play a major role in the busy East-West shipping lane. At present, Magam Ruhunupura Mahinda Rajapaksa Port (MRMRP) is functioning at its capacity and will increase storage by 100% within the next one year, coinciding with the opening of the second phase, which will have additional seven berths and a fully functional container port as well.
