National Food Safety Week, which is organised by the Ministry of Health to protect the health of the people, began yesterday and will last until 29 August.
The Director General of Health Services Dr. Palitha Mahipala has said that during the week measures will be taken to inspect restaurants as well as school canteens.
All hotels too will be checked this week, the Government Information Department reported.
“In our country people don’t consume a sufficient amount of vegetables and fruits. The challenge we in the health sector face at present is controlling non-communicable diseases. At present people’s sugar intake is high. Therefore, we have to educate the public,” Dr. Mahipala said.
