Neluwa Medagama and Karawita tea factories owned by Tea Small Holder Factories PLC have been successful in obtaining OHSAS 18001:2007 certification on Health and Safety standards at the workplace.
The factories come under the umbrella of the John Keells Group Plantation sector and are managed by John Keells (Teas) Ltd.
In line with the Group’s policy of Health and Safety at the workplace, the certification of the factories were undertaken to educate and protect the worker in the environment he or she is working in.
Specific training was done on assessing work related risks, prevention of injuries, fire fighting, ergonomics, personal hygiene and first aid. The implementation of OHSAS resulted in providing solutions for effective management of the work related risks whilst structural improvements were carried out to ensure legal compliance in some areas specifically in the area of dust levels in working areas, noise levels and light. In addition all needy staff and employees were provided with the required Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) in areas where effective risk controls are not available.
The company has been successful in obtaining OHSAS certification for three other factories within the group increasing the tally to five certified factories.
