The Sri Lanka Neutraceutical Association (SLNA) yesterday warned that the industry has suffered a severe blow as protein products that don’t containing whey protein have also been removed from the shelves.
SLNA Chairman Ahmed Rheyas said the protein foods, body building and fitness industry employs over 15,000 and confusion has endangered viability of the business.
“The authorities should clear this issue than blowing whey protein aspect out of proportion than letting the legitimate industry suffer,” Rheyas added.
“If there is a harmful ingredient found in the milk foods we should ban such products but the public has been misinformed and all protein and whey proteins have been taken off the shelves. The Director General of Health Services should specify exactly what is harmful to people and what is not, instead of blanket statements,” SLNA Chief opined.
He also warned that early clarity on the crisis was critical since many consignments imported from the US are lying at the port pending clearance.
