One of the sectors targeted by the BOI is Aquaculture to boost Sri Lanka’s fisheries production. One company which was approved by the BOI recently is Senura Aquaculture Lanka Ltd, which will establish a fish farm in Chilaw.
The company will invest US$ 100 million in developing 1,000 acres of lagoon land (private owned land) in the Chilaw district.
The company is a collaboration with an Israel company named AR Aquaculture Ltd.
‘Senura Aquaculture’ will be a state-of-the-art fish farm managed by a team of Sri Lankan and Israeli experts in the Fisheries and Aquaculture industry. Under the agreement the company will build an office complex with conference hall facilities, a hatchery complex, fish breeding units, laboratory facilities and fish and prawn cultivation ponds.
This project is being studied as a role model by many State Universities and Research centres to build up knowledge in the science of aquaculture. It is supported by institutions such as the Ministry of Fisheries, National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency (NARA) and National Aquaculture Development Authority of Sri Lanka (NAQDA).
