Eastern Merchants Plc has announced the appointment of Channa S.L. De Silva as the new Managing Director of the company and its subsidiaries, Eamel Exports Ltd. and Spice Lane Ltd., with effect from today.
The appointment follows the retirement of longstanding Managing Director Anil Karunaratne.
De Silva was previously a director and holds 12.4% stake along with Chairman J.B.L. De Silva who holds 27.57% and H.J. De Silva who has 13.73% stake. Another Director C.I. Tilakaratne also holds 13% stake.
After completing his Bachelors’ degree in the fields of Econometrics and Marketing from the University of Sydney, De Silva completed a Master’sdDegree specialising in Finance at the same institution. Thereafter, he worked for three years in the Strategy and Analytics team of a Fortune 500 company before returning to join Eastern Merchants.
Having joined the company after his school career at Royal College, Karunaratne acquired almost unparalleled firsthand knowledge of natural rubber and the trading of it internationally in his career spanning some 40 years. Instrumental in the company’s success, he was appointed Managing Director in 2006.
Following the changes, the Board of Directors of Eastern Merchants Plc comprises J.B.L. de Silva (Chairman), C.S.L. De Silva (Managing Director), H.D. de Silva, N. K.L. Tilakaratna, S.A. Chandraratne, S. Jayakody, C.I. Tilakaratna, Rohini Nanayakkara, H.P.J. de Silva and I.P. De Zoysa.
