The World Bank’s newly appointed Country Director for Sri Lanka and the Maldives Francoise Clottes met Basil Rajapaksa, Minister of Economic Development yesterday. The meeting took place at the Ministry of Economic Development. Minister Rajapaksa and World Bank country director reviewed the progress of the development projects initiated under the World Bank’s assistance.
The Economic Development Minister also explained the importance of the support of development partners like the World Bank in implementing the Government of Sri Lanka’s ambitious plans for reconciliation and economic expansion, the Mahinda Chintana Ediri Dakma, the Government’s program for future development. During the meeting, Clottes’s reaffirmed the World Bank’s strong and expanding support to Sri Lanka as it transitions to a peaceful, middle-income country.
Francoise Clottes’s appointment as the World Bank Country Director for Sri Lanka and the Maldives was made effective from 1 August 2013. A French national, Clottes has worked at the World Bank since 1994 and has exercised managerial responsibilities within the World Bank since 2000.
Her experience includes analytical and operational work in several regions, including Africa, Middle East and North Africa, Europe and Central Asia and Latin America and the Caribbean, with a strong focus on middle income countries. Her last assignment before moving to Colombo was as Country Director for the Caribbean Countries in the Latin America and the Caribbean Region, responsible for 14 countries.
