What Sri Lanka requires is not just projects executed by donor agencies and voluntary organisations but how each of these projects get connected to the mainstream economy of Sri Lanka, commented the 1st Lady Governor of Rotary Sri Lanka and Maldives Gowri Rajan at the installation ceremony of the new President PHF Rtn Jayampathi Mawilmada at the Rotary Club of Colombo Regency at Taj Samudra. Rotary Sri Lanka has invested over a $ 200 million in projects in the country today and the Governor added that almost all of these projects have been focused on linking it to the value chain of that respective system using a private-public-people modality which was a strategy that connects that makes it possible to connect to the main stream economy. This also enables the project to be sustainable in the longer term said the Rotary Governor, who comes from a successful business background where owning a family run business based in the central hills of Kandy. Commenting on a key project that will be launched in the near future: “We will provide almost a $ 100 million in hardware and software together with services extended to provide hearing aids to needy children across the country and we have linked the project to the base hospital of the respective district where the audiogram will be done and the identity of the recipient will have to be authenticated by the GA’s office and then only the respective potential recipient can apply to the Rotary Club of that geographical area, who will in turn will be linked to the private sector technical expert who will do the configuration for the final award to be made by Rotary. “This gives a sense of shared responsibility and definite sustainability for anyone to replicate in the years to come and I urge every Rotary club to continue these best practices and also share it in the community under the theme ‘Light up Rotary’ declared by RI President Gary C.K. Huang earlier this year.”
