Open source forum 2014, a first

The first enterprise forum about open source ever held in Sri Lanka, the ‘Open Source Forum Sri Lanka 2014’ took place at Galadari, Colombo recently. Participants included top executives and corporate leaders from Sri Lanka’s business community and the government sector. The objective of the event was to maximise the value of big data, cloud computing, virtualisation, content management systems and business intelligence through the adaptation of open source. This is aimed at bringing in affordability, control and openness. Linux and Virtualisation Global Leader Channels & Embedded Mickey Bharat made the keynote presentation on ‘CIO’s journey from Data Centre to Cloud. Closed Source vs. Open Source?’ Bharat’s keynote presentation touched upon various aspects of the CIO’s journey to the cloud. Among these subheads were: (1) What motivates spending on data centres? (2) Evolution of Heterogeneous hypervisor  data centres, (3) New wave of virtualisation called application driven virtualisation (4) Virtualisation Tier One Applications (5) Operating Systems and Hypervisors ‘Reduce Data Centre Cost and  Complexity and Open the Door to  Cloud’ (6) Change in market conditions, (7) Why are organisations like Oracle participating in the Open Source Revolution? and (8) Open Source for Enterprise? Technical presenters included Amazon Web Services Head Partners and Alliances – India and SAARC Vivek Gupta on ‘Cloud Computing and Democratisation of IT’ and Oracle Linux Senior Channels Manager Amit Jain on ‘Linux for the Enterprise – Fast, Modern, Reliable’. The panel members included presenters along with industry leaders such as Global Leader Channel & Embedded Oracle Virtualisation and Linux at Oracle Mickey Bharat, Amazon Head of Partners & Alliances India & SAARC Vivek Gupta, SLASSCOM Chairman and Virtusa Head of Digital, Senior VP/GM Madu Ratnayake, Digital Commerce Lanka Ltd. Chairman/Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT) Co-Founder and Board Member Thilan Wijesinghe and ICTA CEO Reshan Dewapura.
