While the country is harvesting a bountiful rice crop, farmers complain that the purchasing price of paddy has gone down in the market.

Sources from the paddy cultivating areas say that the price of a kilo of samba paddy has gone down to Rs. 22 way below the government registered price of Rs. 30 per kilo. The purchasing price of a kilo of Nadu rice has declined to Rs. 15 to 18, sources say. The government registered price for a kilo of Nadu rice is Rs. 28.

However, the price of rice in the retail market still remains high compared to the purchasing price.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Paddy Marketing Board publicised two telephone numbers for the farmers who are experiencing difficulty in selling their harvest to contact the board. They are 0112335411 and 071 8450226. Paddy Marketing Board says that they will purchase paddy at the government registered price. (Colombo Page)
