Pelwatte Milk Foods is a locally produced milk food brand that will enter the local market shortly.

Liquid milk for this factory is collected from the Districts of Monaragala and Ampara amounting to 150,000 litres per day.  The Pelwatte Dairy Industries Ltd. has been established with an investment of Rs. 1.4 billion.

The factory presently produces yoghurt and ice cream and research on producing milk food is in the final stages at the moment.

The Chairman of the Company Ariyasheera Wickremanayake said that the launching of the new milk food would be carried out when a convenient date was obtained from President Mahinda Rajapaksa and the new product would be marketed at the same price as the milk food of the Milco Industries.

He said that the factory has the capacity to produce 20% of the local milk food requirement.

The 2011 Budget paid special attention to the livestock sector and has proposed to increase the farm gate price for liquid milk to Rs. 50 per litre. The Budget has also provided special credit facilities at 8% interest to promote small scale livestock activities.
