A Pettah trader was yesterday charged for infringement of copyright before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court after he was arrested on charge of having kept to sell printed photographs taken from the episodes of Abheetha Diyani and Sujatha Diyani telecast by Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation (SLRC).
SLRC Assistant Marketing Director Lester Gunawardena and Photo Journalist Sujith Marambage had made a complaint with Pettah police, alleging that the suspect had sold the photographs taken from the episodes of Abheetha Diyani and Sujatha Diyani without SLRC permission. The complainants had told police that the SLRC was telecasting two tele-dramas on an agreement with Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation of Korea. They further alleged that the suspect Mohammed Salabudeen Mohammed had sold them without the permission of SLRC and thereby violated the provisions come under Intellectual Property Act.
When the case was taken up before Colombo Chief Magistrate Gihan Pilapitiya, the suspect pleaded not guilty for the charges and thereby the case was fixed for trial. Counsel Lankantha Ratnayake under the instructions of Neelakanthi Wijekoon appeared for the complainants.
