The Colombo Crimes Division has arrested two suspects in the last month’s fire at the Colombo Port, Police Media Spokesperson SP Buddhika Siriwardena told local media.

The early morning fire broke out on May 24 in the Container Freight Station (CFS) -1 warehouse at the JCT terminal inside the Port of Colombo completely destroyed the warehouse and its contents. Large stocks of electronic appliances, footwear, and ready-made garments were destroyed in the fire and damages were estimated at Rs.556 million.

The Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) raised suspicion that the fire was an act of sabotage when they discovered that only 4 CCTV cameras recorded the fire although there are 32 CCTV cameras at the terminal. The authorities also noted that there was a delay in calling the fire department to douse the fire. Reportedly the fire erupted at around 1:00 a.m. but it was around 1:50 a.m. when the Fire Department was notified.

The CCD is conducting further

investigations.
