Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa distributed twenty thousand pomegranate plants among 200 families of the Punchiappu Jandura village at Lunugamwehera Punchiappu Jandura temple on 12 November with participation of Lunugamwehera Divisional Secretary and the Private Secretary to the Minister of External Affairs Himali Ratnaweera.
The objective of this project is to have a foreign market for pomegranates which is very popular in foreign countries and the Mattala Airport can be used to export them in the future.
The Community Development and Livelihood Improvement Unit of the Ministry of Economic Development granted the project worth Rs. 760,000. A special variety of pomegranate plants called ‘Himali’ was distributed among the farmers, which is sustainable to environmental conditions of the area.
