The Prof. H.A. de S. Gunasekera Memorial Oration 2013 will be held on Friday, 12 July 2013 at 4:00 p.m. at the Senate Room, University of Peradeniya. The Oration will be delivered by Prof. Premachandra Athukorala, Professor of Economics, Australian National University on the topic, “Sri Lanka’s Post-Conflict Development Challenge: Learning from the Past”.
Prof. H.A. de S. Gunasekara was Professor of Economics and Head of the Dept of Economics and Political Science of the then University of Ceylon. He succeeded Prof. Das Gupta to become the second occupant of the Chair (and the first Sri Lankan) in the Department in 1961. He also served as the Dean of the Faculty of Arts at Peradeniya (1963-1969) and later on as Secretary, Ministry of Planning (1970-1977) under Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike. He was a much respected academic and public servant. A large number of his students have made outstanding contributions to both academic and public life in Sri Lanka and overseas.
Prof. Premachandra Athukorala is Professor of Economics at the Arndt-Corden Department of Economics, Crawford School of Public Policy, Australian National University, Honorary Professorial Research Fellow at the University of Manchester, UK, and Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia. He is the author/editor of over 10 books, four edited volumes, 60 chapters in multi-author volumes and 95 articles in academic journals. During his career, he has served as consultant to the World Bank, Asian Development Bank, ILO, UNDP, UNIDO, ESCAP and AUSAID – these assignments have resulted in work on Bangladesh, Cambodia, Ethiopia, Georgia, India, Indonesia, Jordan, Laos, Malaysia, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam. He holds a B.Com. (First Class Honours) from the University of Peradeniya and a PhD in Economics from La Trobe University, Australia.
The oration is organised jointly by the Dept of Economics and Statistics, University of Peradeniya and the Prof. H.A. de S. Gunasekera Memorial Trust Fund. The event is free and open to the public. Please RSVP to - [email protected] or 081-2392622.
