Reconstructed Bope Poddala wood carving village to open on Sunday

The recently reconstructed Bope Poddala wood carving village will be declared open by Traditional Industries and Small Enterprise Development Minister Douglas Devananda and Deputy Minister Weerakumara Dissanayake on 8 December. The village was reconstructed at a cost of Rs. 6.5 million. The village was reconstructed in accordance with the ‘Mahinda Chinthana – Idiri Dekma’ and the Budget proposal 2012 which worked towards enhancing and strengthening traditional handicrafts villages. The direct beneficiaries of the development project are mainly 121 craftsmen and workshops are in place for 57 craftsmen in the village. Equipment distribution ceremony for all the 121 craftsmen will also take place at the occasion. The main objective of the National Crafts Council is to showcase the creative designs of the handicraftsmen to the global platform and enable increased production and export of handicrafts to facilitate the flow of the foreign exchange directly to the handicraft village to make the villages the nucleus of the economy. Therefore, the newly reconstructed Bope Poddala wood carving village will enhance the concept of traditional handicraft enterprise villages to harness the diverse skills, creativity and talents of the rural masses who are already engaged in the handicraft sector to support, assist and link their products to the international export market with the objective of transforming the traditional handicraft villages into a dynamic and important segment of the national economy and encouraging exports in crafts sector.
