The Government has received approval from the cabinet to award the contract for the initial package of a project to reconstruct 25 deteriorated bridges on the national highways with a loan from Kuwait. The government has received a loan amounting to 10 million Kuwaiti Dinars (US$ 36 million) from Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED) towards the cost of the project to reconstruct 25 bridges in the island. Implementing of this project will help to mitigate traffic congestion in high traffic corridors and traffic accidents while improving the connectivity of the road network, according to the government. The 25 bridges, identified for reconstruction under this project, are either narrow or in weak condition, the government says. The 25 bridges on the National Highway Network include 9 bridges in Western Province, 3 bridges in Southern Province, 5 bridges in North Western Province, 4 bridges in Sabaragamuwa Province, 3 bridges in Northern Province and a bridge in Eastern Province. The project has been divided into three Contract Packages and the first Contract Package includes eight bridges. The Cabinet approved a proposal made by the President, in his capacity as the Minister of Highways, Ports and Shipping, to award the contract for the Contract Package 01 as recommended by the Standing Cabinet Appointed Procurement Committee (SCAPC).
