Bathiudeen was speaking at the opening of the 317th Lak Sathosa branch – and the first branch in Batticaloa District – at Kalawanchikudi on 28 February. Sources said the 317th Lak Sathosa, under Ministry of Industry and Commerce, has earned almost Rs. 400,000 on the first day of its operations.

“Sathosa is still the main retail giant of Sri Lanka and closest to the consumers,” said Bathiudeen. “The Unity Government of President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe aims to better the lives of Sri Lankan consumers. As part of this, we are now ready to open 189 new Lak Sathosa branches in the next 10 months. This will bring the total Lak Sathosa network to 500 by 2017. We are increasing the network to give an efficient service to Lak Sathosa consumers. To make the network efficient, we are also planning to computerise the entire network. We are also planning to give enhanced services to Government servants through Sathosa.”
