Rohantha outlines global packaging trends, urges industry to drive sector reforms

The Sri Lanka Institute of Packaging (SLIP) celebrating the 16th edition of the Premier International Packaging Exhibition supported by the Asian Packaging Federation (AFP) staged a one day ‘Packaging Congress’ at the Sirimavo Bandaranaike Memorial Exhibition Centre. 

The keynote speaker Dr. Rohantha Athukorala – Chairman of the 35 billion rupee Lanka Sathosa retail network, whilst commending the role of SLIP for the convenience provided to the 20 million people of Sri Lanka that purchase goods and services for almost $ 85 million dollars a month, urged the industry to get involved with the national issues to influence policy decision to drive policy reforms and uplift the industry of the country. 

“You must emulate the best practices of Sri Lanka’s apparel industry, tea, cinnamon and sapphire sectors; the key objectives being to instil policy reforms and thereby increase the value addition and support traditional sectors,” he said.

The speaker with his international experience of working in the South Asian Region in global multinationals like ReckittBenckiser and being a former Chairman of Sri Lanka Export Development Board and Sri Lanka Tourism outlined the six key trends that are influencing the global trends in packaging. 

The first, Digital Evolution – digital print that creates ‘hyper’ personal experiences; the second, being Show Me The Goods – clean-label messaging that enhances brand transparency and builds purchasing confidence. The third, Phenomenal Flexibles – next-gen hybrids that offer functional and environmental benefits alongside great shelf presence. Fourth, More Than ‘Just’ Green Packaging – eco-responsible packaging that empowers social consciousness; fifth, Size Matters – ranges that consumers view as right-sized for themselves and shifting use-occasions; and the sixth, Packaging Mobil-ution – apps that support ‘mobile-engaged’ packaging voiced, Dr. Athukorala. 

The President of The Sri Lanka Packaging Institute JDC Perera agreed to this key message stating that most recommendation were being given to the line ministry and with the recommend action of increasing the voice will help the industry in the budget recommendations for 2017. He also voiced the positive sentiments addressed on the sector wise strategies for gave insights to the industry on developing key strategies on sustainability.
