Chemical safety management learning event for industrial professionals   The National Cleaner Production Centre is organising a learning event for chemicals handling industries on the topic of ‘Chemical Safety Management through United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP) Responsible Production (RP) Methodology and OHSAS 18001: occupational health and safety management systems’ from 23 to 27 March from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Plastic and Rubber Institute of Sri Lanka, Rajagiriya.   The objective of this five day training workshop is to enhance capacity amongst professionals in the chemical handling sector on integrating ‘safe chemical management’ through UNEP RP methodology and OHSAS 18001 principles that could guide and drive safer chemical operational practices in a cost effective manner. UNEP’s RP approach has been designed to build capacity for chemical safety management across the value chain. It engages businesses, supply-chains, distributors, traders and buyers in safer production, accident prevention and emergency preparedness. It does so in a manner that demonstrates commitment to core Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) issues such as: environmental impact reduction, workers safety, stakeholder engagement, community engagement, and supply-chain management. Responsible production is an integrated approach for chemical safety management and chemical product stewardship along the value-chain, targeted at Small and Medium Sized companies (SMEs).   It will cater to the needs of all chemical handling managers and executives, fire fighters, ware house managers and chemical products promoters. The session will include an explanation of RP tool developed by UNEP to introduce safer and healthy operational practices of handling chemicals and also aim at building capacity on OHSAS 18001 standards which will be conducted by well reputed consultants in the field of chemicals management. The workshop will be elaborated through presentations, video displays, case study presentations and field visit (fifth day). More information on workshop registration can be obtained from www.ncpcsrilanka.org.
