SALA Enterprises offers ‘Language Companion’

On easy payment scheme through the State Trading Corporation to government employees SALA Enterprises, a reputed company in Sri Lanka’s information and communication technology sphere, has introduced the ‘Language Companion’, a speaking Sinhala, Tamil and English Electronic Dictionary. This is the first time that such an innovative speaking dictionary has been launched in Sri Lanka. SALA Enterprises has unveiled an easy payment scheme together with Sri Lanka State Trading (General) Corporation targeting school teachers and government servants in particular to enable them to purchase this on an instalment basis. This means that they will not have to tie up their cash to make an upfront purchase, but opt for convenient and hassle-free monthly repayment under this scheme. SALA Enterprises was established in 1992 by its Managing Director, Chinthaka Wijewickrama and has successfully completed 22 years in the Sri Lankan IT market. As a top entrepreneur in the sphere, he serves as the incumbent President of the Federation of IT Industry Sri Lanka (FITIS). “As Sri Lanka is a multi-cultural and multi-lingual society, we saw immense potential in developing and bridging the gap between languages by introducing the Language Companion,” says SALA Enterprises MD Chinthaka Wijewickrama. This unit has made a significant impact to many users in communicating with other races and bridging the communication barrier and bringing about national harmony, he said. “With the objective of minimising the hassle and expenses, we introduced this compact, portable pocket sized unit which speaks the preferred language with the correct pronunciation.” “This speaking dictionary in English, Sinhala, and Tamil can provide a vital platform for language learning. We have already added over 120,000 Sinhala words to the Sinhala dictionary database and it carries the prestigious Oxford English Dictionary, Oxford Thesaurus and the popular Comet Tamil Dictionary,” Wijewickrama emphasised. Apart from these factors, this unit has many other features that could improve the users’ grammar, pronunciation and accent with English, Sinhala and Tamil lessons specially designed by professional language teachers. Adjustable audio speed assists in clear, articulate intonation of words in all three languages, he said. The ‘Language Companion’ is a Sinhala Tamil, English translator with a Dictionary and Thesaurus with voice. It has over one million translations from Sinhala to English and Tamil, Tamil to Sinhala and English and English to Sinhala and Tamil. English Oxford Dictionary with over 350,000 words, phrases, meanings and encyclopaedic entries. It also consists of synonyms and antonyms with 600,000 example sentences. The Sinhala keyboard layout consists of the famous Wijesekara keyboard layout. The Tamil layout is of the Renganathan keyboard layout. The Language Companion keyboard has been designed according to the comfort of the users giving space between each key for easy typing. Keeping in mind visibility, the screen consists of a backlit panel. This unit comes with a zoom in function as well. Some of the other features are a full functional calculator, metric converter, scientific calculator and formulas in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. In order to assist the user in pronunciation, a built in voice recorder has been incorporated. With future expansions in mind, the unit has been designed with a memory card slot which can be increased to 8GB. This enables the user to store e-books and music or any other valuable information. For users who enjoy music, this unit comes with a MP3 player and a voice recorder. At the National Best e-content Awards ‘e-Swabhimani’ Awards organised by the Information and Communication Technology Agency, SALA Enterprises emerged as winner for the Electronic Dictionary in the e-inclusion category.
