The market and business development opportunities seem brighter for Samaposha, manufactured by Plenty Foods (Pvt) Ltd. (PFL), a subsidiary of Ceylon Biscuits Ltd., as the company has been conferred with several quality assurance credentials. As a result of these certifications, Samaposha is now poised to compete more aggressively in global markets and be the first Sri Lankan manufactured cereal brand to do so.
Plenty Foods Limited received the ISO 22000, HACCP and GMP certifications from the Sri Lanka Standards Institute recently. These certificates endorse the hygienic nature of the raw material used for the process, cleanliness of the manufacturing process and the excellent manufacturing practices of a food processing operation.
CBL Group Managing Director Sheamalee Wickramasinghe attending the ceremony said: “CBL and its subsidiaries continuously strive to adopt the best business practices applicable to the food industry in order to constantly improve the processes with the objective of making the end product, the best product for our discerning customers. This journey has been possible as a result of combining our backward integration process, technical expertise, research and development and staff participation enabling us to manufacture nutritious products for the Sri Lankan and international markets.
Samaposha, a principal local cereal brand manufactured at the state-of-the-art processing unit of Plenty Foods Ltd. in Pallakele, is manufactured using local raw materials, namely, corn, rice, soya and green gram. “Samaposha, a brand that has been nurturing and nourishing millions of Sri Lankan children (and adults) from many walks of life for many years is now well poised to embark into the all important international market with the acquisition of these quality certificates,” said Plenty Foods Ltd. Director / CEO Shammi Karunaratne. He further stated that CBL products have reached many overseas markets successfully due to their consistency in quality and taste. The quality guarantee given to Samaposha is a reverberation of the excellence of the brand and Plenty Foods in general. “The farmers registered with the company, the staff employed at our factory and the entire Plenty Foods team has been equal partners in working towards this milestone of the company,” Karunaratne stated further.
The strength of Samaposha remains with the stringent quality assurance practices and concentrated efforts mobilised to ensure good quality cultivation systems, harvesting practices, crop selection, etc. Plenty foods has its own special farmer care unit and warehouse in Madatugama, its manufacturing plant in Pallakele and warehouses and technical/support units spread across the cultivation areas, that help the overall manufacturing process.
Samaposha consists of nine vitamins and minerals that are essential for the health and well-being of the consumer. Currently the brand is exported to a few overseas markets and with the quality assurance certifications in hand; the company will now explore many more potential markets.
