‘Burn Calories – Not Electricity’ was the message for Sampath Bank’s employees on the Bank’s Green Day 2014. Pennants with the messages were displayed in advance and on the Green Day – 20 May, the staff at head office led by the Managing Director walked up to eight floors sending a strong message to everyone on the need to save energy. On the theme ‘Love Life – Love Nature’ the Sampath Bank Nature Protection Club (SNaPC) distributed valuable plants on Green Day to those who really can look after a plant until it grows. They were given the option to select plants of their choice. Since Green Day 2013 when the event was held for the first time, the bank started the calculation of carbon foot print of the head office building during the year. Based on the outcome of this calculation a series of posters were displayed in the  building in order to makethe  staff members aware of the total carbon emission of the bank with a view to obtain their commitment to lower the carbon emission. A competition to select the ‘Outstanding Eco Teams 2014’ among the staff was also announced in line with green day celebrations. Under the guidelines of this competition, respective eco teams have to complete a tree planting project with a minimum of 100 trees. In addition, the members of teams should reduce their monthly electricity consumption (units as per the electricity bill) in their households compared with the pre determinedbase month.  The competition organised by the Nature Protection Club is held among the branches and departments of the Bank. Sampath is the only bank in Sri Lanka to initiate such a competition for the staff.Table mats with environmental friendly messages on the theme ‘Save Water’ were presented to all team members to mark Green Day. ‘Environment’ is one of the five pillars of 5E’s of Sampath Bank’s CSR program. Green Day initiative is a continuation of the concern for environment and conservation that Sampath Bank built up over the years extending for over two decades. The bank has been working closely with the Wildlife and Nature Protection Society which is mandated to prevent the destruction and harmful effects on animals, the fauna and flora due to commercial expansion. Sampath Bank initiated a program to contribute five rupees per every ATM/Debit card issued to the Society’s Fund which is happening since 1994.
