The Securities and Exchange Commission of Sri Lanka (SEC) will be hosting a regional seminar on ‘Supervision and Surveillance of Market Intermediaries’ organised by the Asia Pacific Economic Corporation (APEC) – Financial Regulators Training Initiative (FRTI) from 23 to 27 September at the Cinnamon Grand, Colombo. APEC endorsed the establishment of the FRTI to enhance training efforts for financial regulators. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has been acting as the Secretariat to the FRTI and financially supporting its training activities with the objective of strengthening content management of national training programs. The SEC is hosting the event for the third consecutive year and nearly 65 participants from the Asia Pacific region are expected to attend the seminar this year. The seminar is designed for individuals with a minimum of four to five years of market intermediary supervision. The seminar is geared at disseminating the latest trends on supervision and surveillance, effective incorporation of technology in supervisory activities, adoption of a risk based supervisory approach and creating awareness on cross border supervision. Supervision and surveillance of market intermediaries are of utmost importance when regulating the capital market. A constructive regulatory structure acts as an incentive towards the growth of the capital market. The SEC identifies the regional seminar as an ideal opportunity to expand and strengthen the supervision and surveillance system in the capital market.
