Sri Lanka Railways has commenced the construction of a double railway line from Kalutara to Aluthgama to accommodate the traffic and minimize delays.
The double line is constructed under a proposal of the Minister of Transport Kumar Welgama.
Sri Lanka Railways Deputy Chief Engineer Wijaya Amaratunga said that the first phase of the project is now underway and it will be completed by mid-2014. The eight kilometer railway line will be constructed at a cost of Rs. 300 million.
Part of the track is constructed reclaiming the land of Kalutara lagoon and the rest of the construction is carried out on Sri Lanka Railway land reservations.
