Selmo Ltd., a company in the forefront of the Sri Lankan packaging industry, celebrated their 30th anniversary recently, where long-standing staff members were recognised and appreciated for their service and contribution towards the development and success of the company. At the celebration Selmo Managing Director Anton Hemantha presented gifts and tokens to staff. Selmo manufactures and supplies innovative packaging solutions catering to the needs of companies producing various consumer items and foodstuffs. Speaking on the company’s milestone Hemantha said: “Selmo was birthed in the midst of trouble times in the history of the Sri Lanka in August 1983. The idea was conceived when a neighbour was seeking to obtain inexpensive packing materials for his tea export business and I was trying to help this neighbour through a friend’s polybag factory to get the required packing. This was never intended as a business start-up.” However, when Hemantha realised that more orders began to flow in and that he was making his monthly salary in his job at the time through just one single polybag order, he decided to focus on the supply of polybags instead of working for another company. “There was no question of turning back from that day and we then went in to supply the fast growing garment export trade in addition to the tea industry. Today, Selmo is a recognised packing supplier to Sri Lankan industry,” Hemantha explained. Speaking further Hemantha said: “Maintaining a venture for three decades, facing the ups and downs within this competitive environment is a great challenge and surviving in it is a victory. “During the past 30 years, we added a number of new product lines. We added the flexible packing line in 1995 and a new production location in Dekatana from where we are able to supply laminates.” Selmo supplies multicoloured printed and unprinted packing products in pouches or in reel form for FFS machines for chocolates, toffees and confectioneries like  cakes snacks, biscuits, drinks and soft drinks, tea, noodles, soya, meat products, condiments, dry foodstuffs, agro-chemicals products such as insecticide, weedicide and fertilisers. These are made out of converted aluminium foil, polyester, polypropylene or nylon films.    Goods packaged in these high barrier packaging materials even under various storage conditions. Packaging material is designed to restrict the admission of oxygen and moisture and other gases. Selmo is using modern machines and used in the world for pack.
