The national handicrafts festival Shilpa 2013 will be declared open by the Minister of Economic Development Basil Rajapaksa today at 4 p.m. at the Sirimavo Bandaranaike Memorial Exhibition Centre.
The National Craft Council (NCC) under the Traditional Industries and Small Enterprise Development Ministry will stage Shilpa 2013 national crafts festival from 15 to 19 August from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Parallel to the Shilpa national exhibition and trade fair, other features will include the ‘Wisithru’ new designs exhibition, ‘Ranma’ exhibition focusing on tourism handicrafts, ‘Yugayata Nimaum’, a new design launch by National Design Centre, an independent designers’ exhibition, a palmyrah and kithul exhibition and an art competition for the school children.
Handicraftsmen from all over the island from the north to the south will participate with their products and new creations to showcase the proud handicraft heritage of Sri Lanka. There will be 130 marketing stalls with more than a 1,000 exhibition stalls to give the experience of indigenous creations under one roof.
This will be a marvellous chance for those who are in related fields because famous craftsmen like Rohan Perera, the famous pottery designer, and Darshi Keerthisena, the famous batik designer, will be on the show to give visitors an unparallel experience.
In addition, the performances by the national dancing and music groups, performances by school children, and a music event by the Towerhall and Kapirinna group from Puttalam will add colour to the festival.
The NCC invites the public to come and enjoy an inimitable experience at this year’s festival which not only carries economic value but also a very exceptional educational and social value.
