Colombo Dockyard was the automatic choice for Siem Offshore, when OSV. Siem Sasha was due for her intermediate survey drydocking and DP2 system upgrade. The vessel was operating in Indian coastal waters, thereby making Colombo one of the best locations for her repairs. Colombo had handled her sister vessel Siem Hanne successfully during October 2013, gaining confidence of the owners on yards expertise and capabilities. Once the decision was taken to place the vessel in Colombo, the project was handed over to the Ship Management Team for smooth co-ordination. The drydocking related repairs were completed as the first phase, while the second phase involved the DP2 upgrading project. The work scope during this intermediate survey consisted of:
  • Surface preparation and coating of hull, ballast tank cleaning
  • Anchor chain calibration
  • Steel renewal on hull
  • Vent head overhauling, hot water pipe renewal, mob and davit annual test, deck crane annual load test, overhauling of all four tunnel thrusters, port and stbd rudder stock repairs.
  • Overhauling of main engine, propeller shaft port and stbd, main reduction gear complete overhaul
  • Overhauling of engine room valves, Fi-Fi water pump overhauling
The project was coordinated by Ship Manager Nalin Kulatilaka, ably supported by the production team including the Engine Department’s K. Asanka De Zoysa, Deck Department’s Maurice Perera, Electrical Department’s C.M. Munaweera, Carpentry Department’s P.D.A. Ranpath and Hull Treatment Department’s K. Kalubowila. The repairs were carried out meeting the requirements of the owners and classification society DET NORSKE VERITAS (DNV). Upon completion of sea trials for DP2 system performance the vessel steamed to its next charter to the waters of West Africa. The owner representative Vessel Manager Audun Øien overlooked the project in Colombo. The local agents for the vessel during this call were Wilhelmsen Maridian Navigation Ltd. Colombo Dockyard has aggressively promoted its services in Norwegian offshore market, where many offshore operators are present. Shipyard showcased the repair and building capabilities at the international shipping exhibition ‘Norshipping 2013’ in Oslo during June 2013, thus, branding Colombo as a reputed repair centre for Offshore Support Vessels in the Indian Ocean for the majority of the OSV’s operating in the Indian subcontinent waters.
