Sri Lanka is the only country that is not facing the energy crisis in the South Asian region, WB South Asia Region Senior Operations Officer Diep Nguyen-van Houtte said.

She noted that with one third of the population going without electricity in the region, causing huge constraints on growth in their respective economies, the issue had not touched Sri Lanka.

While 60% of Indian firms rely on private power generation and Bangladesh loses 1.2% of GDP due to power shortages, Sri Lanka is the only country with enough power and energy.

“Sri Lanka is the only country with no shortages. Everyone has energy deficit issues except for this country, which actually has a surplus of energy. While the other countries remain below the line, Sri Lanka has some 30% surplus in energy,” she said.
