Sri Lanka’s investment in R&D is a meagre 0.13% of GDP when the world average is about 1% and the private sector contribution to this figure is also very low.
Although the Government has from time to time introduced various measures (matching grants, tax incentives, low interest loans, etc.) to encourage the private sector to invest in R&D, these measures have had limited impact in raising private sector investment in R&D.
The SLAAS-NASSL joint lecture series will be held on 29 October at the SLAAS Auditorium from 4:30-6:30 p.m. The objective of the seminar is to obtain the views of the Government and the private sector on the above subject.
The program for the seminar is as follows:
Chairperson: Dhara Wijayatilake, Secretary, Ministry of Technology and Research.
Financial measures currently in operation: Dr. B.M.S. Batagoda, Deputy Secretary, Treasury.
Role of BOI: Dr. Lakshman Jayaweera, Chairman, Board of Investment.
Views of Industry: Large industry engaged in R&D – Eranga Jayewardena, CEO, Slueta-MAS Holdings;
SME Start up company – Dr. Vaz Gnanam, Director, Credence Genomics.
The lectures will be followed by a panel discussion and an action document will be forwarded to the treasury and other stakeholders.
