The Sri Lanka Institute of Directors (SLID) having taken on the task of spreading the message on governance to the provinces, continued with its initiative in Ratnapura.

Having first addressed an audience of over a 100 participants in Kandy a couple of months back, SLID moved in to Ratnapura last week. ‘Conducting Business Responsibly’ was the topic that afternoon jointly organised with the Sabaragamuwa Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The seminar was conducted in Sinhalese and was free of charge to all those who participated. The hall at Nilani Lodge in Ratnapura was teaming with businessmen and entrepreneurs from diverse businesses, including gem merchants, tea factory owners, and other SMEs.

The banks in the district were also well represented.  It was revealed that the Ratnapura District had never before been addressed on a similar topic.

In fact the Chamber was intrigued when SLID made a proposal to conduct a seminar of this nature to its members. The Chamber and the participants were extremely appreciative of the efforts made by SLID to conduct this programme   Two well known personalities in the accounting and the legal field conducted the seminar under the following topics. The University of Colombo’s Head of the Dept. of Commercial Law of the Faculty of Law Indira Nanayakkara addressed the topic ‘The Company as a Legal Entity and the Minimum Requirements to be Complied with’ and Harischandra Mills PLC Chief Financial Controller Saman Rasaputhra addressed the gathering on ‘Minimum Finance, Accounting and Tax Issues.’

Both presentations were excellent and the feedback received was extremely encouraging.

SLID intends to take its message on governance to the far reaches of the eastern coastal town of Trincomalee, and from there move on to the Northern territories as well in the near future.
