The Sri Lanka-Russia Business Council (SLRBC) of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce hosted a dinner in honour of Ambassador Alexander Karchava, Ambassador of the Russian Federation in Sri Lanka on 30 January 2013 at the Colombo Club, Taj Samudra, Colombo.

Delivering the welcome speech, Hiran Karunaratne, President of the SLRBC said: “The Sri Lanka-Russia Business Council warmly welcomes its patron Ambassador Alexander Karchava. From the first day in his capacity as the Ambassador of Russia in Sri Lanka, Ambassador Karchava has been actively involved in promoting economic ties between our two countries.

“He has been meeting members of our council, members of the Sri Lankan business community at large and visiting Russian businessmen and has himself visited some of Sri Lanka’s production facilities. He is a very results-oriented person and encourages us to achieve the maximum possible.” He added: “Ambassador Karchava has a wealth of experience working in Asian countries such as Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia, and has seen how those countries have developed. Over these few months, I have come to be convinced that Ambassador Karchava has developed a great friendship towards the people of Sri Lanka and a sincere wish to see this country developing in the same manner as the other Asian nations mentioned.

“We are grateful to him and wish that together we will be able to contribute greatly towards that development by further strengthening and taking economic cooperation between Sri Lanka and Russia to new heights.”

Addressing the gathering, Alexander Karchava stated: “There is no doubt that the Sri Lanka-Russia Business Council is a highly representative forum of the Sri Lankan business community elite and a very efficient instrument of strengthening trade and economic relations between our two countries. It is obvious that we do have a good potential for expanding trade and economic ties.

“Besides the traditional spheres, I can see great potential for strengthening cooperation in such fields as education, space research, oil and gas exploration, power and energy industries.

During my tenure of office as the Ambassador of Russia, I see my task to open new vistas of further fruitful cooperation between Russia and Sri Lanka.” Priyantha Hapuarachchi, Vice President of SLRBC, in his vote of thanks expressed his gratitude to the Ambassador for his unstinted support in developing bilateral economic cooperation and requested the same to be extended further.
