The national standards body of Sri Lanka Standard Institution (SLSI) has taken measures to introduce standards for the vegetarian food, the Ministry of Technology, Research and Atomic Energy said recently.

These measures will be taken as there are large number of people who are practicing vegetarianism due to various reasons including religious beliefs, health and well-being. Technology, Research and Atomic Energy Ministry Secretary Dhanushka Ramanayaka, in a statement to the media, said a new level of standardisation will be introduced for food products to safeguard the rights of vegetarians in Sri Lanka. The SLSI has already drafted some guidelines for preparing vegetarian food, according to the official.

A forum is scheduled to be held with the participation of public and religious representatives at the SLSI head office, to gather public opinion in this regard. The draft will be available for general public’s view on 22 May, at the SLSI head office.
