The event was designed to encourage the business community in the Southern Province to improve their standards of business practices and to achieve a high level of entrepreneurship. With the request of NEDA, HDCC managed the whole process to select winners and to organise the award ceremony.
The Chief Guest was Minister of Industry and Commerce Rishad Bathiudeen while Indian Consular General Office in Hambantota Consular General Raj Kumar, Minister of Fisheries, Animal Production and Development, Environmental Activities, Rural Industries, Electricity and Rural Estate Infrastructure Facilities Development D.V. Upul and Minister of Education, Land and Land Development, Highways, Information Ministry Chandima Rasaputhra participated as special guests.
Medium scale agro based product winner
Ministry of Industry and Commerce Additional Secretary M.A. Thajudeen, Ministry of Industry and Commerce Director Indika Ranathunge, NEDA Chairman N.M. Shaheed, NEDA Director Sudantha Akmeemana, NEDA President and Board of Directors, past Presidents of HDCC, Presidents and Board of Directors of Galle, Matara and Ratnapura Chambers of Commerce, representatives from banks and the Government and many other distinguished guests participated.
Seventeen winners were selected by a panel of judges. The competition was held under the three sectors under four categories and six special awards.
The Enterprise Excellence Award was won by M.M.A. Wakeel – Chairman/Managing Director of Kuruduwatte Tea Factory in Galle. This is the most prestigious award of the event. It recognises the most outstanding enterprise in the Southern Province.
Best Enterprise Award for Industry and Manufacturing Sector in Micro was Dinesh Surange Weerasinghe – Proprietor of Shrimalie Marketing, Hambantota; Small was Y.G. Ajantha Shrilal – Managing Director of Print House Offset Printers Ltd., Galle; Medium was P.S. Danthanarayane – Proprietor of Vision Industries, Galle; and Large was M.M.A. Wakeel – Chairman/Managing Director of Kuruduwatte Tea Factory in Galle.
Best Enterprise Award for Agro Based Industry Sector in Small was K.K.P. Saman Kumara – Proprietor Micro Agro Products, Beliatta; Medium was N.G. Manjula Nishantha – Managing Director Malindu Dairies Ltd., Angunukolepellessa; and Large was W.H. Gamini, Managing Director – W.H.G. Group of Companies, Tissa.
Best Enterprise Award for Service sector in Micro was A.A. Sanath Kumarasiri – Proprietor, Sanath Auto Electricals, Hambantota; Small was A.A. Nimal Yasas Kantha – Proprietor, Nimal Motors, Galle; Medium was Dhammika Ganegamage – Managing Director, Ruhunu Motors Engineering Ltd., Hambantota; and Large was P.H. Ruwan Dayajeewa De Silva – Managing Director , Sripalie Contractors Ltd. These are the main awards of the event. It recognised outstanding enterprise in three sectors under four categories.
Five special awards were presented to the best performance in five thematic areas.
