Sri Lanka-Singapore Business Council holds 16th AGM

The 16th Annual General Meeting of the Sri Lanka-Singapore Business Council (SLSBC) was held on 28 June 2013 at the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce. The SLSBC was inaugurated in 1997 under the aegis of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce with the objective of promoting trade, tourism and services between Sri Lanka and Singapore. Shamil Mendis, Chairman and Managing Director, Spear International Ltd. was elected as the President of the Council for the year 2012-2013. In his address he stated that the year 2012-2013 has been an eventful period for the Business Council. Some of the significant events undertaken by the Council included the Sri Lanka-Singapore Business Forum which was organised to coincide with the visit of K. Shanmugam, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of Law of Singapore who was accompanied by a high-profile business delegation, signing of the MoU between the Singapore Business Federation (SBF) and the Sri Lanka Singapore Business Council (SLSBC) of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce, official visit by International Enterprise (IE) Singapore, the Singapore Government’s Agency promoting international trade, to identify commodity trading companies in Sri Lanka and to investigate their scope and possible expansion plans to set-up offshore trading companies in Singapore, joint networking event of the SLSBC and Singapore (Sri Lanka) Club, facilitating the connection between the National University of Singapore (NUS) and Sri Lankan companies in the introduction of the NUS Internship Program, and the recently-concluded successful Trade and Investment Promotion Mission to Singapore, to name a few. Mendis stated that in this manner the Council will undertake initiatives to further promote bilateral trade relations between Sri Lanka and Singapore. The SLSBC co-operates closely with IE Singapore, the Singapore Business Federation, the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Singapore Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Singapore Malay Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Sri Lanka High Commission in Singapore in the pursuance of its objectives, said Mendis. Prajeeth Balasubramaniam, Managing Director, Blue Ocean Ventures Ltd., Upali Bandaranayake, Managing Director, Forbes Services Ltd. and Rohitha Mendis, Managing Director, Prudential Shipping Lines Ltd. were elected as Vice Presidents of the Council. The following Members were elected to serve on the Executive Committee of the Council: A Baur & Co. Ltd, Ceylon Grain Elevators Ltd., Ovearseas Realty (Ceylon) PLC, Tellida Ltd., Aitken Spence Cargo Ltd., and MAC Holdings Ltd. The Ceylon Chamber of Commerce acts as the Secretariat to the Council.
