Chamath Palihapitiya may not be a household name in Sri Lankan business circles but that did not stop him from returning to the land of his birth after 11 years of success in Silicon Valley to explore opportunities available to him to play a role in the growth of the country. Among Palihapitiya’s many successes is his role as a founder member of the Facebook management team. He then invested in companies that he knew would eventually grab attention. Thereafter he started his own venture capital fund called The Social + Capital, a venture which raised over $ 275 million. Staying in line with the Government’s policy of encouraging investments that would benefit a wide spectrum within the country, Minister Ruwan Wijewardene introduced Palihapitiya to President Maithripala Sirisena to discuss ways in which he could contribute to the growth of Sri Lanka. Palihapitiya’s visit to Sri Lanka ended with him and the State Minister for Defence committing to explore available possibilities and actively moving forward on the points discussed during his meetings while in Sri Lanka.
