St. James has been a mark recognised for quality Uva tea as far back as 1924, when was awarded a certificate for ‘Excellent Uva Quality Tea’ by the Ceylon Committee of British Empire Exhibition.
In keeping with this reputation at the weekly tea auctions conducted on 7 August, St. James established an all-time record price of Rs. 1,000 per kilo, for a line of Pekoe 1 Grade in the Uva Medium Elevation Category.
This record price has surpassed the previous record of Rs. 910 per kilo set in September 2008 by ‘Bombugala Uva’ mark.
St. James comes under the purview of the management of Malwatte Valley Plantations PLC. This line of tea was purchased by Euro Scan Exports Ltd. and the sale was conducted by Forbes & Walker Tea Brokers Ltd.
