Third Global Commerce Excellence Awards 2014 on 15 December

Post war, Sri Lanka’s most prestigious awards ceremony will be held for the third time on 15 December 2014 at the Galadari Hotel Colombo. 100 Sri Lankan companies and individuals will be recognised in association with the Central Bank of Sri Lanka for achievements and excellence in the Global Commerce industry. Central Bank Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal has taken a lead role in supporting the awards scheme and has been a catalyst for its success. Out of the recipients 75% will be from the export industry and the balance from the service industry that supports the global commerce industry of Sri Lanka. The event is held bi-annually for Sri Lankan and international investor companies on a rotation basis, which means the assessment of performance is based once in three years for the two sectors (local and foreign). The 2014 event will cover a cross section of export industry, brands based on performances for three years along with the support services such as shipping, logistics, banking, insurance, business media, and state institutions providing trade facilitation and successful imports substituting companies being the rest to be recognised. Co-ordinating and organising committee chairman CEO of the Shippers’ Academy Colombo, Rohan Masakorala said that analysis of data and information to select the recipients were provided by respective government institutions and trade associations.

 MasterCard supports Global Commerce Excellence Awards

The 2014 Global Commerce Excellence Awards will be presented alongside MasterCard for the first time ever as the master title sponsor, bringing international recognition to the event MasterCard is a technology company in the global payments industry. They operate the world’s fastest payments processing network, connecting consumers, financial institutions, merchants, governments and businesses in more than 210 countries and territories. MasterCard’s products and solutions make everyday commerce activities such as shopping, traveling, running a business and managing finances easier, more secure and more efficient for everyone.
  The Export Development Board, Sri Lanka Tea Board, National Gem and Jewellery Authority, Sri Lanka Ports Authority, Sri Lanka Export Credit Insurance Corporation, Board of Investment of Sri Lanka were the key state institutions that supported us with data. In addition, Shippers’ Academy Colombo, Bankers Association of Sri Lanka, Sri Lanka Apparel Exporters Association supported with data and nominations which were approved by the Central Bank Governor’s office. The GCE awards since 2011 for the past two years also followed this method and does not call for applications but go through an independent assessment process through available and credible data, which recognises recipients’ efforts. Business volumes, turnover, brand development, growth, and trade facilitation were the key areas looked at for selection. In addition best practices, engagement in ethical and creative business are some of the other aspects taken into consideration when names were short listed. The awards will take place on 15 December, from 6:30 onwards under the patronage Secretary Ministry of Defence and Urban Development as chief guest, and Governor Central Bank as guest of honour.
