Two 10 MW wind power plants to Jaffna

For the first time the Government is holding an open competitive bidding process that will kick off next week for two 10 MW wind power plants in Chunnakam, Jaffna.

Power and Renewable Energy Deputy Minister Ajith P. Perera said that they would be calling for an open competitive bidding process on 27 July for two 10 MW wind power plants in Chunnakam Jaffna.

The Government is looking at a mix of renewable energy sources such as LNG, solar, wind and biomass, he told journalists at a special press briefing held at the ministry yesterday.

He emphasised that renewable energy such as solar and wind power had now become affordable energy sources for middle income countries like Sri Lanka, which was beneficial not only in supplying energy at a low cost but would also help preserve the environment and create new business opportunities for local and foreign investors in these fields.

“In the future we will offer licenses based on this system,” he added.

In addition, Perera said that they would soon introduce solar power as well.
