Velanai dry-fish project inspection tour

Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa and Japanese Deputy Prime Minister Katsuya Okada engaged in an inspection tour of the dry-fish project in Velanai on 5 May.

The three-decade of conflict has deprived the fishing community in the Northern Province in Sri Lanka of their basic needs. Fishing, the major livelihood activity of the community, has been severely affected during the conflict. With the end of the conflict, fishing activities are recovering.

This dry fish project was implemented with the aid of JICA project and carried out by an NGO. Five dry fish projects were carried out in Jaffna District with the assistance of JICA. Minister of Traditional Industries and Small Enterprise Development Douglas Devananda and Northern Province Governor Maj. Gen. G.A. Chandrasiri also participated in the inspection tour.
