Parliamentary or Presidential – which will drive ‘Systems Change’?

  • The country’s Presidential position places enormous power in the hands of one individual, unlike the Westminster system.
  • The misuse of these Presidential powers has been evident since its inception, and there is no compelling evidence that it has served the people any better than the Westminster system it replaced.
  • The overwhelming call of the 2022 people’s uprising was for a systemic change. To achieve this, there needs to be a change in the profile of those entering Parliament, who can then decide on the continuity of the Presidency and influence the profile of future Presidential candidates.
  • By holding the Presidential election first, with the usual ‘suspects’ competing, there is a high risk of an overarching power blanket that can dampen the prospects of radical change in Parliament. Hope not.
