During ancient times, Sri Lanka boasted a high standard of skills in hydraulic technology, construction, architecture and crafts. Skills were transferred from elders to youngsters ensuring a regular supply of skilled artisans. The system broke down during the colonial rule, due to different skills which were required in colonial society.

Today affluent parents send their children to overseas universities, while others try their destiny with local universities. Those who fail to obtain the required grades pursue courses in IT, accountancy or vocational training courses offered by a multitude of private and government organisations, depending on the parents’ financial capabilities.
